The Fitzwilton Hotel & ChezKs Restaurant

Rooms 88. B&B from about €39.50pps. Restaurant Chez-K's D Special, 3-course with bottle of wine 49.50 for two. Bar menu 12-9 dailyFree covered car parking available. Gym, beauty salon, free WiFi. abbreviations

Centrally located close to the quay, this modern 4* hotel is within comfortable walking distance of all the main visitor attractions in Waterford City and has earned a reputation for giving great value in both accommodation and food.

A bright reception area with attractive casual seating makes a good first impression and it’s a pleasant, if slightly impersonal, place to stay or to drop into for a break in the large café-bar, The Met, which features a lovely display of Waterford Crystal and offers an all-day menu (12-9 daily).

A wide range of guest rooms is offered and this includes not only the luxury of a penthouse suite and the convenience of family rooms - but, unusually, also generous single rooms, making this an ideal choice for business travellers. All are all furnished to a high standard, with good en-suite bathrooms (shower and bath), work stations and all the amenities that today’s traveller demands.

A very good cooked breakfast based on top quality local ingredients is served in the main dining room, Chez K's. The artisan producers who supply many of the ingredients are listed on the menu – along with the story of the Waterford Blaa, a unique bread roll made in Waterford and parts of neighbouring Kilkenny.

Chez-K’s

A large high bright room with plenty of natural light and large paintings by artist Darlene Garr on the walls, Head Chef Darren Collins and his team offer cooking well above the standard normally expected of hotels.

You might begin with a well made soup and house breads, or an appealing house smoked salmon dish - Beetroot & vodka cured house smoked salmon, served with wasabi and shaved fennel, for example.

Interesting main courses will always include some fresh fish dishes and creative vegetarian options, and there will be good meat choices such as Slow cooked tender pieces of beef cheek, smoked potato fondant, cavolo nero & treacle glaze - and perhaps an unusual Wellington Chicken, wrapped in a puff pastry with mushroom duxelle, buttered peas and spinach & a thyme cream.

And, to finish,a homemade dessert such as lemon creme brulée with shortbread rounds a meal off nicely.

Service is friendly, although it can sometimes be lacking in direction.
