A familiar brand to two generations, Peadar and Mairin O’Lionaird’s preserving company Folláin (‘Wholesome’) was established in 1983 and is one of the earliest and best loved of Ireland’s new wave of small, quality food producers.
Beginning with a very 1980’s product, grapefruit marmalade (which is still produced along with three other marmalades), their range now includes half a dozen jams (high fruit/low sugar options) with all the fruit preparation done by hand. They also make some seasonal specialities such as cranberry sauce and redcurrant jelly, and several relishes.
Uniquely, the blackberry jam is made with wild berries picked from the West Cork hedgerows, and it’s a popular way to earn a few bob while having a day out - you can join the picking team by applying through their website.
Although it’s grown a lot down the years, this is still very much a family concern and at the heart of the local community. Folláin products are widely available, from good grocers and supermarkets nationwide.
