Founded by Kevin O’Crualaoi in Ballincollig in 1957, O’Crualaoi Butchers is now managed by his son, Micheál O'Crualaoí, and has spread its wings to places such as Fermoy, Wilton and Carrigaline.
The Carrigaline branch is much more than a butchers shop. Bright, modern and spacious – it is a state-of-the-art ‘food retail hub’ comprising a butchers counter, an excellent deli counter and a popular café-style restaurant which serves excellent food at very competitive prices.
While the seating is quite basic, the café area is supplemented by an outdoor area that can be covered with an awning and here there is also room for the kids to play, with the highlight being quite a large play-house.
A carvery offers some inviting and very reasonably priced dinner choices - stuffed turkey, two types of chicken, roast loin of pork, slow roast striploin of beef (supplement), loin of bacon and fillet of haddock are all typical, at just six euro for one plateful, ten for two.
A salad bar offers good value too - such as a wrap or sandwich (with one meat and three salads), with a soup thrown in, for just a fiver. Teas and coffees are also available and a range of desserts at very affordable prices (cookies for a euro, for example, apple crumble for two).
Even if you haven’t time to eat, you may go to the deli counter and choose a meal, big or small, to take home - again keenly priced.
