Good baking has always been a strength of Irish cooking and it’s a pleasure to find a gem like Richie Carroll’s Picardie Bakery in the centre of a country town.
Offering traditional continental breads alongside some Irish sodas, and beautiful patisserie, it’s delightfully situated at the restored Cavan Water Mill in Cavan Town and is the first County Cavan bakery to be accepted as a member of Real Bread Ireland (www.realbreadireland.org).
The patisserie is just the kind of thing you'd expect to find in France, and there are a couple of tables outside in the courtyard where you can enjoy your treats on site, along with a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
But get there early if you're shopping for bread, or you’ll be faced with empty baskets!
