Galway Irish Crystal has long been recognised as one of the world's best loved Irish crystal brands. Reflecting its location on the shores of Galway Bay, each piece of Galway Crystal is inspired by the rugged beauty of the local landscape, or by its wealth of folklore and ancient history. A visit to the factory is high on many must-do lists when in Galway, and a bite at the café and restaurant above the Galway Crystal factory shop, Salt @ The Glass Factory, is well worth factoring into the itinerary.
The interior in this expansive café reflects the heritage of the building - chandeliers hang from the ceiling, deep Chesterfield sofas abound and chairs are upholstered in arresting shades of magenta, mustard and floral prints. The botanical theme continues on the prettily printed teapots, cups and saucers but, while the décor overall is vibrant, the walls are kept spartan to exhibit the work of local artists.
Pleasing surroundings, and with food to match - locally-sourced produce and attention to detail are the hallmarks of Chef Paul O'Connor's wholesome home-cooked dishes, and many regulars come in specially for pastry chef Ron Wise's breads, savoury pies, scones, sweet buns, pastries, and cakes, all baked fresh every morning and available to take home.
The day starts bright and early with a terrific breakfast that not only offers the full Irish, traditional breakfast dishes and omelettes, but also freshly baked scones and savoury pastries, and lighter dishes such as granola with natural yoghurt, raspberry compote and seasonal fruits, or crème fraiche with fresh berries. The vegetarian breakfast of smashed avocado with poached eggs on toasted sourdough, a potato Danish, beans, grilled mushroom and tomato is very popular.
Lunchtime brings a wide selection of hot and cold dishes such as fresh soups, quiches and varied salads and, if time is not on your side, a pre-order service is available.
Whether it is a full Irish, a wholesome home-cooked lunch, or a cinnamon swirl with a comforting cuppa that you are after, SALT @ The Glass Factory is well worth a visit.
