Renamed Cabra Castle in the early 19th century, the Corscaddden family's impressive hotel is set amidst 100 acres of grounds, with lovely views over the Cavan countryside.

It is a sister property to Ballyseede Castle Tralee, Bellingham Castle, Co Louth (see entries) and the recently acquired Markree Castle, Co Sligo (undergoing renovation). As well as the castle theme, all have friendly resident dogs (Irish wolfhounds in most cases) as a connecting factor.

Although initially imposing, with its large public rooms and antique furnishings (and even suits of armour in the foyer), the atmosphere is relaxing. This is perhaps surprising, as Cabra Castle is believed to be haunted...

The bedrooms vary in size and outlook, but all are comfortable and individually decorated; accommodation includes some ground floor rooms suitable for less able guests and, in addition to rooms in the main building, there are some rooms in an extension which are particularly suitable for families - and six cottages have been built more recently, adding 27 rooms and allowing a self-catering option for some guests.

There are also some romantic beamed rooms in a converted courtyard, providing modern comforts without sacrificing character.

The combination of formal background and easy ambience make this a good venue for private and business functions; it is popular for both weddings and conferences.

* See sister establishments:  Ballyseede Castle, Tralee, Co Kerry; Bellingham Castle, Co Louth; and Markree Castle, Co Sligo.
