The Silver Fox Seafood Restaurant

Shane Carroll and Gopal Kawander have been proprietors of this well known restaurant since 2006 - Gopal is the head chef, and he serves interesting local fish dishes with flavourings from South East Asia

Children welcome (high chair, childrens menu, baby changing facilities); toilets wheelchair accessible; air conditioning. Closed Feb. Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser. abbreviations

This well known restaurant in Kilmore Quay was originally established in 1991 and, has been under the direction of proprietors Shane Carroll and Gopal Kawander since 2006. Gopal is the head chef, and he is serving interesting local fish dishes with some flavourings from South East Asia.

The three rooms are simply decorated, with cream walls allowing an uncluttered background for nautical paintings by local artist Ivan Sutton (all for sale). An extensive (perhaps over-extensive) à la carte menu is offered and, although fresh fish is the main focus, steaks, lamb, duck and chicken dishes also feature, so there is something for everyone.

The cooking is reliable and, except for the Asian flavourings in some dishes which set this restaurant apart, food is quite straightforward: crab with Marie Rose sauce, cod fillet with chive cream sauce, and panfried fillet of plaice are all typical.

Prices tend to be on the high side considering the easy availability of fresh fish, but the early bird menu is interesting and it represents good value.

Staff are very pleasant and knowledgable, and there is a short wine list of 10 white and 10 reds appropriate for the style of food (with plans to increase the list).
