Embassy Steakhouse

Generous servings of good quality food, served efficiently in a relaxed environment and giving good value for money explain the Embassy’s popularity
Seats 60. D daily, 6-10pm, a la carte; L Sun only, 12.30-2pm, set 4 course Sun L €21.95; house wine €18. Free broadband wi/fi; toilets wheelchair accessible; not suitable for children under 15; air conditioning. Closed Good Fri, 24-26 Dec. MasterCard, Visa, Laser. abbreviations

Situated in the centre of Sligo’s old town on the banks of the Garavogue River, the dark facade of this popular restaurant is not particularly inviting, although five arched windows in a stonework wall give it some character and attract attention to a stylishly well appointed interior – and, from the inside, they allow a glimpse of the Garavogue.

The decor has a gently modern feel in subtle browns and creams; a mix of high back leather chairs and banquettes around bare-topped wooden tables contrast nicely with open stonework walls, and comfortable snugs add character and break groups up.

Quite an extensive à la carte menu offers plenty of popular dishes, including starters like stuffed mushrooms house-style and crab claws in garlic butter; mains lead off with a choice of char-grilled steaks served with the signature Jameson Whiskey Sauce and include several poultry and fish dishes and one for vegetarians.

Desserts are home made, including a hot chocolate fondant with basil ice cream, which make a successful combination.

Generous servings of good quality food, served efficiently in a relaxed environment and giving good value for money explain the Embassy’s popularity – and the food is complemented by an appropriate choice of wines, including several half bottles.
