In common ownership with Cabra Castle in Co Cavan, Castle Bellingham in Co Louth and Markree Castle in Sligo (see entries), this is a very likeable hotel of character with 15th century origins.
Set in 35 acres of parkland and gardens on the edge of Tralee town, it is spacious, stylish in the traditional style, and very comfortable, with quirky features that give a sense of fun - you may well be greeted by the resident Irish wolfhound. Mr Higgins, or his less prestigious but equally friendly canine companion, Einstein.
There’s a relaxed and airy country house feeling about the place and it would make a good base for playing the championship golf courses in the area, or visiting the nearby Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry.
An unusual cultural attraction is that they put on a dramatic production every summer and this is a great success - it is often a Shakespearean play, or perhaps an adaptation from a classical novel such as Pride and Prejudice.
They also have a particular reputation for weddings, although the small number of rooms means that most guests have to stay in other accommodation locally.
Restaurants
Ballyseede Castle has always had a reputation for good food and it is a deservedly popular dining destination in the area. The O'Connell Restaurant offers fine dining in lovely surroundings every evening, and an extensive all day menu is also offered, in Pappy's Bar.
