Visitors to this medieval town are delighted to find this charming fourth generation craft bakery and café, which has been pleasing customers (including the author, William Trevor) since 1901.
Nuala Hickey - who is an energetic member of the Tipperary Food Producers group, dedicated to showcasing the county's wonderful produce - now continues the family tradition, baking her unique traditional crusty bread, artisan bread, and cakes including the famous Hickey’s barm brack. Recognition for this speciality includes a gold in the 2010 Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards, and it is also available online.
Beside the bakery counter, the little café is set up with closely packed tables, where locals and visitors mingle cheerfully, enjoying the wholesome food. Excellent coffee too, served in big white mugs.
