What a delight it is for the visitor to happen on Thomas and Bernie O'Keeffe's cosy and well-run harbourside pub.
With its handsome traditional ‘drinking bar’ on the right and much larger lounge bar (where food is served) on the left as you enter, both cheered by open fires and with friendly staff quick to welcome arriving customers, it is a reminder of the reason that Irish pubs are famous throughout the world.
The building is much larger than it first appears and the lounge bar extends well back, leading into a back bar where an impressive carvery is set up.
Unlike many establishments offering meals under the carvery banner, the food not only offers good value but is fresh, well cooked and appealingly displayed.
The informal, comfortable setting makes for a relaxing outing with family or friends, and service is excellent with staff constantly checking on tables and also the all-important fires (of which there are at least three).
While it’s a place that is hard to leave, regulars have plenty of good reasons to return as often as possible – and visitors are equally welcome.
