In the centre of Carlow town, directly opposite the Cathedral, this stylish and sociable venue has everything that makes a good night out.

As soon as you enter through the gated courtyard and up the steps, a little piece of Spain appears. The atmosphere is authentic with good music, racks of wine bottles around the bar and a hand-written blackboard tapas menu.

An arched window overlooks the Cathedral and the front section is all wooden floorboards, tables and chairs, while the back part – the smoking area – is bright and modern and may have more of a buzz about it at quieter times.

Tapas, those small portions of food originally created to cover the top of a sherry glass, may be quintessentially Spanish but they’ve been gaining popularity in Ireland of late. And as a sociable way of eating, it’s hard to beat - go with some friends, order several dishes and share.

When you’ve finished the first lot, order some more. And there’s no rush. Tapas are made for eating slowly. It’s all about enjoyment – the food, the wine, the atmosphere and the company.

The tapas board at Mimosa changes weekly, so sit back and sip the Mimosa special Sangria or perhaps a white chocolate espresso martini while deciding on your meal. There’s a great variety to choose from, including many familiar tapas but also some less known.

Perhaps chorizo cooked in Tempranillo and figs wrapped in Serrano ham? Or chocolate chilli beef? Patatas bravas are of course, one of the best known tapas. Originally these new potatoes were cooked in seawater to preserve them for fishermen and then baked, thus giving the salty skin.

Well cooked, and served in the dark brown Spanish dishes and bowls that make any garnish unnecessary, this tasty food is just the thing to accompany the extensive and carefully sourced wine list. Main wine regions from around the world are well represented but port and sherry are off-list, so check with staff to see what’s available on the day. Prices are reasonable, starting at €18, with many available by the glass.

A great place to visit with friends.
