A lovely out of town dining destination with all the Browns of Derry hallmarks of outstanding cooking and classy surroundings, this is an independently operated restaurant at the Letterkenny Golf Club.
The stylishly renovated bar and restaurant are on the first floor, overlooking the golf course - and perhaps a glimpse of Lough Swilly, if you are lucky with your table.
As you settle into one of the exceptionally comfortable chairs (with a cocktail perhaps) and enjoy the soothing view before placing your order, it's hard to believe you are just outside bustling Letterkenny.
'Fine dining, great wines and excellent service at affordable prices' is the promise and, with Ian Orr, famed executive head chef of the Browns Group, overseeing a talented kitchen team, the bar is set high - but they are well able for it.
There's no supplier list, which is surprising given the attention that Ian Orr has always given to sourcing the best of local seasonal foods, but the names of dishes do give a certain sense of place. And menus are very appealing, so choices may be hard to make.
But it's difficult to imagine disappointment here, when those choices are between equally desirable starters including signature dishes like roast sea scallops with black pudding and celeriac purée or handmade ravioli of Killybegs lobster, with lobster bisque (both gorgeous dishes and perfectly executed).
And main courses such as loin of lamb with shredded shoulder terrine, greens and toasted hazelnuts, or perhaps an appealing vegetarian dish of fresh herb & spinach risotto, with aged parmesan and white truffle oil...
Every dish is beautifully executed, with depth of flavour to match the artful presentation. There's a good Irish cheeseboard for those who like to end a meal on a savoury note but the pretty desserts would be hard to resist, offering a lovely range of stylishly updated classics.
Happily there are plenty of fruit based dishes (a gorgeous lemon posset with crushed candied walnuts and shortbread, perhaps) along with the (several) chocolate specialities and tempting tarts, and many of them come with an imaginatively matched homemade icecream or sorbet.
Service is very professional, and the warm and welcoming staff ensure that everyone feels special.
All this and great value too. All menus are very fairly priced for the quality offered, but the early(ish) dinner menu is outstanding.
A great dining destination - and not just for special occasions.
