1 euro Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality.

Cake Café

A love of traditional food and recognition of the environmental impact of their business are the driving forces behind Michelle Darmody's paradise for cake lovers. But don't be fooled by the name, they've plenty of quality savouries too.

Flower print table cloths and dainty higgledy piggledy crockery create a homely atmosphere, and the open kitchen means you can watch staff merrily baking away.

The cookies and cream with cardamom panna cotta and the 'adult jelly & icecream' made with wine and home-made ice cream are trademark products and expertly made with quality ingredients. As is the lemon curd cake, chocolate brownie and there's a wonderful array of beverages to go with the cakes from iced latte to sweet spiced milk, extra rich Valhrona hot chocolate and twenty different teas including liquorice mint.

A substantial lunch, or breakfast, can be had too including, terrine of Cashel Blue cheese with hazelnut and crème fraiche; Portuguese sardines on toast with black pepper and lemon juice; or something simple from the breakfast menu like toast with proper butter and their own brown sugar marmalade.

But this Dublin restaurants own home-made beans on toast are a marvel, made from scratch with cannellini beans, sausage and tomato, served on hot buttered toast. Faultless.

May open in the evenings in the summer months.

Pleasant by name and pleasant by nature, this highly popular spot also offers baking classes, private cookery classes, and even wine classes as well as charming everyone with their quirky home baking, to eat in the café or take home. Personalised cakes to order - even 'breakfast in bed' (complete with newspapers) delivered to your door, if you live nearby.

Baking classes regularly offered, also other classes on unusual themes, such as soap making.
