Clodagh Fay, sister of Caroline Boyd of The Stables, operates the old Chestnut pub in Birr town, which poured its first pint back in 1823. She refurbished the place beautifully a couple of years ago, with no expense spared on the stylish dark wood interior, slick bar and comfy layout.
It is a great place to while away a Sunday afternoon reading the papers by the fire. They serve great cappuccinos and mochacinos along with some of the best Guinness you are likely to find anywhere in the country.
Look out for the mouthwatering BBQs they host in the summer - and the full moon market, which takes place on the third Saturday of each month in the courtyard of the pub, stocking everything from organic vegetables to American Indian pottery. (The courtyard is also adjacent to a beautiful secret garden - perfect for long summer evenings.)
Traditional Irish music every Wednesday night.
