Hidden away in the centre of Clonakilty, on a lovely serene Georgian square that contrasts unexpectedly with the hustle and bustle of the nearby streets, The Emmet Hotel is something of a hidden gem.
Owned by the O'Keeffe family since 1998, 'The Emmet' is currently run by chef Marie O'Keeffe (famed for great 'real food') her son Robert and his wife Rebecca, a terrific team who have reinvented this historic premises to create a boutique hotel of character.
The rooms - which include several large family rooms - have all been stylishly upgraded recently and have the extras that mean a lot to guests, including Lavazza coffee machines.
There's loads of old world of atmosphere in the public areas, especially The Front Bar, which is a big favourite with discerning locals - who love the open fire in winter - and a delight for visitors to discover, with its gleaming mahogany bar, traditional floor tiles, and comfy leather seating. Blackboards are a welcoming feature, listing everything from the daily lunch specials to wines by the glass (from an extensive selection) and local craft beers or gins.
Marie O'Keeffe has always been the power behind the kitchen here, and was well known for championing local producers and suppliers long before it was the thing to do - so you can be sure of finding some of West Cork's best produce credited on the Emmet's menus and website.
Daily specials showcase the best produce available on the day - seafood tends to take the starring role, but local meats and poultry always feature too, of course, and vegetarians should be very happy here as the imaginative choices go well beyond the usual offerings, and there's a short menu dedicated to salads too.
Everything about the food is very down to earth. While refined, the cooking is simple and robust, with big flavours and no unnecessary frills - a strong style that runs through everthing from breakfast (served in The Garden Room, which opens onto an enclosed garden where children can play safely), to great lunch and evening specials, Afternoon Tea ( served in the peaceful ambience of The Library) and barbecues in the courtyard garden.
All round The Emmet is just a great place to visit, with a sense of hands-on family care and a lovely buzz.
