Exchange Restaurant & Wine Bar

Although seriously modern, this is a friendly and welcoming place that appeals to all age groups and their colourful, fresh-flavoured food suits the mood perfectly
Seats 120. L Mon-Sat, 12-2.30; D daily 5.30-10 (Sun 4-9pm). A la carte. House wine about £12. SC discretionary; toilets wheelchair accessible; children welcome; air conditioning. Closed L Sun, 25 Dec. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser, Switch. abbreviations

Just outside the walled city, the contemporary design of Mark Caithness's popular bar and restaurant makes a great contrast to the age of nearby landmarks. Although seriously modern, this is a friendly and welcoming place that appeals to all age groups and their colourful, fresh-flavoured food suits the mood perfectly.

They seem to have a winning formula here as prices are reasonable, ingredients are sourced locally as far as possible and the cooking always hits the mark.

At first glance the menu seems very international but close examination reveals plenty to please traditionalists too and blackboard specials reflect the same desire to please a wide range of customers.

A no reservations policy is not popular with all customers, but service is helpful and speedy so even, at busy times, the wait for a table should not be too long.
