John and Lucy Finn's attractive restaurant is on the river, in a charming little award-winning tidy town a few miles north of Tuam - a welcome sight for hungry travellers between Galway and Sligo.

John cooks an eclectic mix of international and traditional dishes - reasonably priced and served in a relaxed atmosphere.

Menus offering about a dozen starters and 16 main courses include a lot of crowd pleasers - a good chowder, deep fried brie and garlic mushrooms among the starters, good steaks and chicken every-which-way, so this is not the place to look for surprises. However, the cooking is consistently good, portions are generous and all mains are served with nicely cooked vegetables and potatoes.

It’s also good value for money and the small village setting - where everyone seems to know someone at another table - makes a welcome change from busy towns.

The wine list is well matched to the food, offering about 18 botttles and all wines other than sparkling are under €26.

On the down side, bookings are not accepted, which is a major disadvantage when diners may travel especially to eat here and then have the inconvenience of a long wait for a table.
