Located on the edge of the town and in a fine hillside location, the Hillgrove is the leading hotel in the area and offers excellent business and leisure facilities.
The exterior furniture sets the tone for the interior – the giant-sized purple chair in the garden is now a landmark feature. The impressive foyer is smartly furbished in a classic contemporary style with the public areas both spacious and inviting.
The main bar and Knuttel Bistro is popular with locals and residents alike and offers a wide variety of snacks and meals – ranging from pan-fried medallions of beef to roast half duckling with honey and caraway - while the quieter Toulouse-Lautrec lounge has complimentary newspapers and board games.
The stylish and well-appointed restaurant, Vettriano, has an outdoor seating terrace and the poultry, duck and beef served is sourced locally from Monaghan farmers. A buffet breakfast is also served here.
Bedrooms are spacious and contemporary, all with pleasant views, a full range of facilities and smart en-suite bathrooms, with both tub and shower. All rooms have free wifi, writing bureau and chair and an electronic safe.
A recent focus has been placed on family breaks with a Kids Club and Creche (during school breaks), play rooms, games room with pool table and outdoor playground.
Staff are friendly and very helpful and hen parties are made welcome, with a range of options for one or two nights.
*Having been owned since 2004 by Colm and Audri Herron - who recently extended and the hotel and undertook major improvements - the Hillgrove was acquired in 2007 by Irish hotel group iNua Hospitality, who also own the five-star Muckross Park Hotel & Spa in Killarney, The Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel and the Radisson Blu Hotels at Little Island Cork, Limerick and Athlone.
