Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality. Previous Georgina Campbell Guides Award Winner

MacCarthy's

Dating back to the 1870s, and currently run by Adrienne MacCarthy, this famous old pub and grocery store really is the genuine article.
Simple bar food - seafood chowder, open seafood sandwiches - is available Mon-Sat, 10.30am-6pm. Closed 25 Dec & Good Fri. abbreviations

Dating back to the 1870s, and currently run by Adrienne MacCarthy, this famous old pub and grocery store really is the genuine article - and the family history is both intriguing and inspiring (just ask about her father's Japanese sword - or buy the book behind the bar).

More recently it became an international sensation, thanks to the late Pete McCarthy's book 'McCarthy's Bar' - but, fortunately, this terrifc place is happy in itself and shows no signs of changing.

Atmosphere and live traditional music are the most obvious attractions, but the grocery is real and provisions the local fishing boats.

You can also get a very good bite to eat here - a superb freshly-made crab sandwich perhaps, bulging with spanking fresh crabmeat, and a big pot of tea - for amazingly little. One to savour.
