McCaffertys Bar

Famous for its views across Gleveagh National Park, McCafferty's is not old but it has all the charm of a traditonal drinking pub, where Guinness is the pint of choice (local craft beers are also available though, also a great Irish spirits list) and the emphasis is on chat and conviviality
Small functions catered (5-50). WiFi. Open from 4.30pm, Mon-Sun. MasterCard, Visa. abbreviations

Designed by Mark McCafferty, built by his father and run by the family since opening in 1998, you can't miss this landmark bar above the dual carriageway when heading north out of Letterkenny.

Located in the aptly named Mountain Top area, its most obvious USP is the rugged mountain view across Gleveagh National Park which can be magic on a fine evening as the sun goes down - but, when the weather fails to oblige, McCafferty's is memorable for other reasons, thanks to its friendly staff, cosy traditional bar, open log fires and memorabilia.

It's not a food place but a tradiitonal drinking pub, where Guinness is the pint of choice (local craft beers are also available) and the emphasis is on chat and conviviality. An Irish Whiskey Menu offers over 25 premium bottles, and there are cocktails ('fresh made with no syrups and shaken or mixed as appropriate') as well as an extensive gin menu.

Although it's not an old building, McCaffrey's bears all the hallmarks of the best old Irish pubs - and there is sometimes music too.

Well worth a visit.
