Denotes genuine Irish food culture, ie special Irish food products/companies/producers, and highlights the best places to shop for regional and artisan foods; the selection excludes obvious 'non-Irish' elements regardless of quality, eg ethnic restaurants and specialists in coffee, wine and other drinks, unless relevant to local production or history. Eat & Stay establishments are chosen for their commitment to showcasing local produce and Irish hospitality.

Mella's Fudge

Everyone has their favourite flavour of Mella McAuley’s handmade fudge, but the starring role in every bar goes to West Cork butter.
Available from: speciality shops in Ireland, also some in the UK, including Selfridge’s. abbreviations

Mella’s fudge is quite an institution in Ireland although it’s not one of those businesses that’s been in the family for generations, far from it in fact. Mella McAuley started making her real butter fudge at her West Cork home, in Bantry, and selling it to local shops when she was only a schoolgirl - fast forward about 15 years and it’s been winning accolades everywhere, including stars (a lot of stars) at the UK’s Great Taste Awards.

Now based up the road in Clonakilty, her fudge is still made the same way and sells in speciality shops all around Ireland as well as some selective locations in the UK, including Selfridge’s. It’s also now available in Supervalu stores and you’ll find Mella’s fudge on sale in Bantry and Schull Farmer’s Markets. She also makes some own brand fudge for favoured clients - as you may notice, for example, if you look carefully at the confectionery on sale at Bantry House.

There are six flavours, including classic vanilla of course, also rum & raisin, walnut, dark chocolate, Irish Cream Liqueur and a seasonal Christmas Spice with Orange. Everyone has their favourite, but the starring role in every bar goes to West Cork butter.
