Formerly The Reginald and one of Waterford's best loved bars, this landmark property beside Reginald's Tower was closed for several years so there was big excitement when local businessman (and chairman of the city's popular Winterval Festival), Barry Monaghan, re-opened 'The Reg' in November 2013.
It is right at the heart of the historic Viking Triangle and the City Wall (a national monument) runs through it, adding interest to a visit here but also adding to the challenges posed by the restoration project - which also involved the inclusion of neighbouring listed buildings and working the with Waterford City Council to create a new public plaza at Reginald’s Tower. The results, inside and out, are a great credit to all concerned, especially Barry Monagahn and his architects, Wigham McGrath & Partners, who have created a fascinating venue - complete with replica Viking ship, floodlit beside the 12th century tower.
And, while it adds a unique extra dimension, you don't even need a sense of history to relish a visit here, as the most obvious end result is an atmospheric pub for everyone to enjoy.
Exploring the building is great fun, as there are so many different bars and other rooms to see, each with its own particular character and purpose. The main bar, which is quite large, has the distinction of having the original wall running through it - well lit, and with the stonework exposed, it is a wonderful feature.
Another, smaller, bar with a nice old-fashioned feel to it is dedicated to the wide range of (over 30) craft beers - including the local Dungarvan and Metalman brews among many others - and there's an intimate Snug Bar for craft beer and whiskey tastings. Like the beer menu, the whiskey list is impressive, offering dozens of whiskeys from Ireland, and whiskies from Scotland, America and around the world. There's also a big party bar (the Dual), a night club (Noc Noc) and a fine first floor terrace - overlooking the Reginald's Tower plaza and the river, it's a delightful spot for relaxing in fine weather.
And it's not all about drinks of course, with Head Chef Nick Foley offering tasty 'Gastro Bar' and Seafood menus every day - all showcasing a wide range of local produce - in both the various bars and first floor restaurant and, also live music every night.
It's a big place and, with so much going on, the ambience varies depending on the time and day of the week, so this is something to bear in mind.
Staff are understandably proud of The Reg, and like nothing better (at quiet times anyway) than to show visitors around and explain a bit about the place and its history.
Well worth a visit.
