Screebe House, spectacularly situated overlooking Camus Bay in Connemara, offers an adult getaway where you can (amongst many other things) just chill out and enjoy beautiful Connemara, indulge in a spa break, swim off the private pier, or have a traditional sporting holiday.
Originally a sporting lodge, Screebe is a member of The Great Fishing Houses of Ireland and offers top class fishing, along with deer hunting on the 42,000 acre wooded estate.
Most of the guest rooms have sea views and are in the main house, plus two newer ones in the new Spa Lodge (alongside the indoor swimming pool) and all are equally comfortable, with very good beds and goose down duvets and pillows - plus toasty en-suite batherooms with underfloor heating and lovely Voya toiletries from nearby County Sligo.
The restaurant also enjoys a sea view and is just the spot to enjoy a good meal at the end of a long day out and about - maybe even including a trip to the Aran Islands, as the departure points (air and sea) are not far away.
Limerick chef Damien Ring came to Screebe with experience at a number of top kitchens in Ireland and abroad under his belt, and it shows. He offers a short tasting menu, or a country house style four course set menu, and his excellent cooking is a perfect match for the setting, which can be quite spectacular on a good evening. Menus read quite simply but the quality of the local produce - much of it, including salmon, shellfish, and game in season such as venison and woodcock, from the estate, its rivers and the sea - combined wth expert preparation make for a memorable experience.
Good, friendly service is a high point too - and, to accompany, craft beers (such as Cascade by Independent Brewing) are offered as well as a good choice of wines. And you can even round off your evening with a drop of the Screebe House triple-distilled Irish whiskey,
Standards are equally high at breakfast, where there's an excellent choice for a small establishment, and all top quality.
A gem in Connemara - and a gorgeus wedding venue too.
