This unusual establishment in the centre of Birr runs through five Georgian townhouses. It was restored and refurbished some years ago, with a central courtyard garden and its surrounding stone arches making a major feature which is still very much a USP today.
Dotted with formally clipped trees in large pots and partly covered with a large awning, it sets a tranquil tone and is a pleasant place to eat or relax over a drink outdoors in summer.
With hands on management by the current owner, Jordan Darrah, a consistent kitchen and delightful staff, it is a favourite destination for both local diners and visitors to this handsome town.
The bar is the heart of the everyday dining experience and, with warmly traditional decor lightened by modern touches and access to the courtyard, it is an inviting room to enjoy casual dining from a menu that includes good pub staples like beefburgers or beer battered fish (both served with triple-cooked chips), but also offers more.
This being the mighty midlands there's a good choice of meats, including several variations on steak, along with ever popular lamb shank - and there are some good vegetarian choices too.
More formally set up but equally appealing, the restaurant has a separate entrance at the front of the building and, although it is also used for overflow from the bar at busy times, is mainly focused on a fine dining experience. Some of the more special dishes from the bar menu are also served here, with the addition of others including more poultry and fish.
When it comes to drinks, there's a good selection on draft - including the local craft beer, Bo Bristle - and cocktails, as well as the wine list.
Accommodation is offered in stylish, recently refurbished 'deluxe double' guest rooms (three of which can be also be twins) with en-suite or private bathrooms; all are individually decorated and named to have local significance, including the sumptuous Ely O'Carroll.
In addition to their own sitting room and a breakfast room, guests have the use of the enclosed courtyard garden at quieter times when the bar and restaurant are closed.
