Although it is in the centre of town, Catherine and Derek O’Sullivan’s attractive bistro is fortunate to have a view of the bay and, despite the nearby traffic, there's no shortage of competition for a table on the small terrace on sunny days.
Inside, it's bright and airy, with tribal art and abstract canvases decorating the walls, and banquette seating as well as comfortable chairs with soft backs - all of which help to create a more relaxed ambience in the evening, when the mood changes from café to bistro.
But, enjoyable as all that is, there's more than pleasing decor and a sea view to this pleasant spot, as it has built its reputation on consistency - and Catherine and Derek's high standards are not just for their food, but also for their customer service.
The day begins early, with a good breakfast. There’s lots of traditional fare here, including a Jumbo Irish for the very hungry, alongside American pancakes served with maple syrup, bacon and eggs any way you like - and, as befits a healthy breakfast menu, porridge is also available, served with honey or mixed berries.
At lunch time, you might enjoy a seriously delicious seafood chowder, while other choices also include fresh fish, paninis and some good salads - possibly including an unusual chorizo salad: with crispy chorizo, toasted nuts, potato and green beans all dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, it is worth looking out for.
Dinner begins with a good 3-course early menu (5-7pm) that's great value, and a reasonably priced 'casual dining' à la carte menu that offers a wide choice of popular dishes like steaks, fresh fish, stir fries, and pastas (such as a tasty Seafood Marinara, with prawns, mussels and salmon in tomato sauce) alongside some vegetarian choices such as omelettes or stuffed peppers.
All main suppliers are credited, and they are local businesses with a strong reputation - O’Flynn’s butchers of Waterford, example, who supply 100% Irish beef, for example, also
Tony Kelly of Dunmore East who supplies fish and seafood, and Brendan Walsh of Slieverue, who supplies locally grown fruit and vegetables.
A short wine list offers a decent choice from the Old and New World, with house wine from about €19.50, and there are local craft beers too: Helvick Gold Irish Blonde, Copper Coast Irish Red Ale, Black Rock Irish Stout, for example, all from Dungarvan Brewing Company.
Consistently good cooking of local ingredients, together with efficient and friendly service have made this a busy place - and there's live music on some nights too. Its success is well deserved.
