Easily spotted on an elevated site above the main road into Bantry, the Westlodge Hotel seems to have thought of all the possible requirements to make a family holiday successful, regardless of weather conditions.

A wide range of outdoor activities can be organised, including golf, water sports, horse riding and pony trekking. But - and this is the hotel's greatest strength - there's also plenty to keep energetic youngsters happy if the weather should disappoint, including a 16m swimming pool in the leisure centre.

Although the hotel is quite dated, bedrooms have been relatively recently refurbished (book a front one if possible) and the staff are friendly and helpful.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant, which is well-positioned to take advantage of the view of the bay.

With extensive grounds and plenty of parking it feels quite a way out of Bantry, but in fact a short walk through the grounds will bring you to the town centre.
