Portstewart, Co. Londonderry
This seaside resort town includes a small sheltered harbour, with attractive houses along the promenade and a beautiful three mile strand stretching to the mouth of the Bann River.
The strand at Portstewart is the main attraction for visitors, which is of blue flag standard and offers excellent surf fishing for bass.
Other local attractions include Agherton Old Church (+44 (0) 28 7083 3277), Portstewart's original church dating from the 1300s and the Flowerfield Arts Centre (+44 (0) 28 7083 1400), which is a venue for arts and crafts courses, and also houses exhibitions and provides art lectures.
The nearby Mussenden Temple and gardens (+44 (0) 28 70 848728) at Downhill, owned by the National Trust is well worth a visit, and was originally built as a library by the Earl Bishop of Derry.
The golf enthusiast will enjoy a round at the 18 hole championship links course at Portstewart Golf Club (+44 (0) 28 7083 2015), which provides magnificent views of the Atlantic and Donegal.
