This attractive town is on the the northern side of beautiful Lough Ramor, which has wooded shores and a great reputation for coarse fishing. It makes a good base for a fishing holiday, or simply exploring an attractive and unspoilt part of the country.
For travellers between Northern Ireland and Dublin it's the ideal spot to take a break - up at The Park Hotel (049 854 6100), perhaps, which has character and very friendly staff and is set in well-maintained parkland and its own golf course and you can get a bite in the bar then take a stroll along the shore.
Another option, in a waterside position right on the Dublin road, is the Lakeside Manor Hotel (049 854 8200; www.lakesidemanor.ie) which has been earning compliments for good food lately - but don't expect a manor house.
