Quinlans Seafood Bar

This simple seafood bar and takeaway is useful to know about for its very fresh fish, good cooking and reasonable prices - and menus in four languages
Open from 12 noon-10pm, 7 days a week. abbreviations

A cousin business of the famous Quinlan's Fish Shops, this simply-appointed but bright and airy town centre restaurant doubles as a takeaway - and it offers outstanding selection of very fresh fish, good straightforward cooking and reasonable prices.

Sourced mainly from the Ring of Kerry (the family fishing and processing company, Quinlans Kerry Fish, is based at Caherciveen), and Dingle, the range of fish and seafood offered varies according to season and availability, but in summer might typically include lobster (very well priced, with a whole lobster salad at about €16.95), crab, hake, salmon, plaice, whiting, prawns and squid.

However, in an admirable bid to take pressure off the over-popular species such as cod, Quinlans are also keen to introduce customers to lesser known but equally delicious and sustainable fish, such as gurnard, ling, pollack and John Dory.

They’ve earned a special reputation for their fish & chips, and many come here specially to enjoy this traditional treat. However, although the majority of dishes are deep fried (admittedly in rapeseed oil, so relatively healthy), there are other options to choose from, including a tasty chowder and simple grilled fish.

Sides are limited - onion rings and mushy peas may be the only vegetables offered - and there are no desserts, but what you get will be good and very fresh.

The menu is in English, French, Spanish and German, and children’s portions are just €5, which makes this an especially useful place for families to know about. Unlicensed.

Also at: Tralee, Cork and Killorglin.
