Parkland designed by “Capability” Brown in the mid-18th century creates a wonderful setting for Raymond and Mary Sweeney’s lovely period house overlooking Lough Swilly.

Raymond and Mary's daughters, Karoline and Irene, are now on the management team and, while that certainly doesn't mean that guests will be deprived of the company of Mary Sweeney, with her exhaustive local knowledge, it brings a youthful new dimension to the business.

Castle Grove is undoubtedly the first choice for discerning visitors to the area, especially executives with business in Letterkenny; it is, as Mary Sweeney says, an oasis of tranquillity. It is at the heart of the Sweeys' large farm and this, together with its uninterrupted view of Lough Swilly, makes it easy to forget that the bustle of Letterkenny town is such a short distance away.

Constant improvement is the policy and recent years have seen a number of additions, always carefully designed and furnished with antiques to feel like part of the main house. The gardens are a special feature and the original walled garden is under restoration as part of an on-going development of the gardens which will continue for some years.

Fresh garden flowers welcome guests in the impressive foyer and public rooms include two gracious drawing rooms, each with an open fire, and a proper bar. Bedrooms are spacious and elegantly furnished to a high standard with antiques and, where practical, bathrooms have walk-in showers as well as full bath.

Personal supervision ensures am exceptionally high standard of housekeeping, and staff are invariably friendly and helpful

Good breakfasts include a choice of fish as well as traditional Irish breakfast, home-made breads and preserves.

Two boats belonging to the house are available for fishing on Lough Swilly and there is a special arrangement with three nearby golf clubs.

Conference/banqueting (25/50). House available for private use (family occasions, board meetings etc) Not suitable for children under 12. No pets.

Rooms 14 (1 suite, 2 junior suites, 2 shower only, 2 disabled, all no-smoking) B&B from €50 pps, no ss. *Weekends/ short breaks available. Open all year except Christmas.

The Green Room:

This large room is in a fairly recent extension, but it has beautiful arched doorways and is furnished in keeping with the original house, with dark green walls and generous, classically appointed, well-spaced tables.

Carefully sourced specialist and local ingredients are used by the kitchen team, and the cooking is good in the modern Irish style. Many of the herbs, vegetables and soft fruits are home grown, the seafood - such as Swilly oysters - is local, and local meats regularly feature.
