Grand Hotel

A traditional, old style hotel with pleasant views
Conference/banqueting (500/300). Business centre, secretarial services, video conferencing, free broadband wifi. Rooms 203 (2 suites, 2 junior suites, 48 executive, 107 family, 10 single, 5 disabled, 189 no smoking). B&B from about €60 pps. Special breaks offered. Leisure centre (21 metre swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym). Lift. Own parking. Wheelchair accessible. Children welcome (under 12 free in parents' room; cots available, baby sitting arranged). No pets. Closed 24-26 Dec. abbreviations

Just eight miles from Dublin airport, and in one of Ireland's most attractive coastal towns, this large owner-run hotel is well-situated for both business and pleasure.

Set in six acres of gardens and with lovely views over Malahide estuary, the original section of this much-extended building dates back to 1835, which gives it a certain gravitas, although the main entrance is no longer through the original front door which has teh date proclaimed above it but at the back of the hotel, where it is convenient to both surface and underground parking.

Recent additions have included an excellent leisure centre, relocation of the reception area and extensive conference and banqueting facilities - but its best feature is the friendly and helpful staff, who are mainly Irish and keen to ensure that guests enjoy their stay to the full.

Bedrooms may seem a little dated but they are good-sized and comfortably furnished, and have simple gimmick-free bathrooms with plenty of shelf space and plumbing that works. Many bedrooms have sea views, and the beach - a tidal estuary with extensive shoreside paths offering good walking - is just across the road.

There are several golf courses nearby and also numerous other activities, including equestrian, fishing, tennis and watersports - and there is much of interest within walking distance in the town itself, including Malahide Castle and its beautiful parklands which can be accessed through a gateway just beyond the pretty railway station.

Although this County Dublin hotels restaurant is rather lacking in atmosphere, eating here should be a pleasant experience. An above average breakfast is served here and the view across the estuary is lovely.
