Just a stone's throw from the busy N11 road, Beaufield Mews is a unique haven of peace and tradition in an increasingly noisy world. It holds the record of being Dublin’s oldest restaurant having been founded nearly 70 years ago by the indomitable Go-Go Kirwan and her husband Valentine. Over the years, she expanded and repaired this beautiful 18th cenury stables and coach house building, eventually launching a restaurant in 1951 with the help of Dublin's most famous French chef of the era, Monsieur Jammet.
And today, this legendary Dublin restaurants still got plenty of character.
Downstairs is the Coachhouse & Garden Restaurant, with the dining room opening out onto the beautiful gardens, making it perfect for weekend meals, weddings and other celebratory occasions. Upstairs the atmospheric Mirror Room now houses the spacious and relaxing Loft Brasserie, complete with its high cross-beamed ceiling, heavy wooden doors and welcoming fireplace. It’s a roomy and comfortable space, eclipsed only perhaps by the warm welcome provided by head waiter and Laois native Paddy Rice.
Food at Beaufield Mews is firmly in the realm of contemporary Irish with a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. There’s a good mix of poultry, fish, red meat and vegetarian options, with ingredients sourced from local, small producers where possible, and these are listed on the menu. There’s a dish on the menu for every family member, from young to old, with generous portions and little contemporary twists.
The wine list is a strong point, with a wide selection spread across countries and continents available at very palatable prices. It’s backed up by a selection of craft beers and non-alcoholic drinks.
The restaurant is currently owned and managed by Go-Go’s granddaughter Julie Cox and her husband John Hoade. From the lights that illuminate the courtyard at nighttime, right through to the beautiful gardens, it’s clear that they are committed to continuing Beaufield Mews’ reputation for a warm welcome and traditional hospitality.
