This imaginative venture by McCabes Wines, whose shop is part of the restaurant, offers a wine experience in addition to brunches and stylish contemporary food.
The wine list offers quality wines at an unusually low mark-up - and you can have any wine from about 800 available in the shop at a moderate corkage charge (none at all when ordering from the table d'hôte menu).
The list, which is organised by grape variety, offers a good range of wines by the glass - and a novel 'try before you buy' offer: you taste a wine before ordering it and, if you like it, you can add it to your bill and have a case put into your car (at a very favourable price) while dining at The Gables: easy peasy.
The restaurant offers modern food with an international tone in congenial surroundings, and the cooking is consistent although service can be uneven.
