Bandon (Droichead na Bandan in Irish) is a lively, bustling town in County Cork that lies on the River Bandon between two hills. The river is well known for its excellent salmon and trout fishing. The main activities of the town are agriculture related, with tourism playing an increasing role.
The name in Irish means "Bridge of the Bandon", a reference to the origin of the town as a crossing-point on the river. It lies 27 km south-west of Cork city and is accessible by bus or car on the main N71 road from Cork.
The town is of historical interest - it was established in 1608 - and still has parts of the original town wall.
