Clonbur (Irish: An Fhairche) is a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) village between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask near the Mayo border in County Galway. Two kilometres to the west rises the Mount Gable which is not a difficult climb and can be scaled in about an hour, where, according to legend, the hordes of Firbolg assembled on the summit before their confrontation with the Tuatha Dé Danann at the Battle of Moytura. If you do make the climb the effort is worthwhile because the views of Lough Corrib stretching away to the south, Lough Mask to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west are simply astounding.
In more recent times this isthmus became known as the Gap of Danger where the "plainsmen" met the men of Joyce and Flaherty country.
Clonbur also contains the ruins of Petersburgh Estate, seat of the Lynch family, one of whose members John Lynch, was a signatory of the American Decleration of Independence.
Clonbur is an ideal centre for the trout angler as it nestles easily between the two great lakes of Corrib and Mast.
