The Cottages
Traditional thatched cottages were once very typical of this part of Ireland and, although the six that make up this beach-side hamlet look so immaculate that you could be forgiven for thinking they are new, they are actually about 300 years old and have recently been re-thatched and renovated to a very high standard.
While holidays would not have been part of the lives of the original inhabitants, the miles of sandy beaches have made this a popular family holiday area for many generations – something that visitors to The Cottages will quickly appreciate especially as, being midway between Bettystown and Laytown, the nearest stretch of beach is not likely to be crowded, even in high summer, and, off-season, you could walk for miles and hardly see soul.
The little hamlet is gated so, although the area has been (over) developed in recent years, the cottages and their surroundings are completely secluded – yet within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
Surrounded by flower-filled gardens, the white-washed cottages are incredibly pretty with climbing roses, lawns and a variety of planting between them to give space, privacy and a sense of tranquillity. Each one of these charming houses is unique but, although varying in size to sleep between two (Honeymoon Cottage) and six (Thatcher’s Rest), all are comfortably appointed for all year use, with traditional interiors (plenty of comfy furniture), central heating, well equipped kitchens, good bathrooms and all the modern facilities anyone could need (phone, internet, radio, TV, video, DVD & CD players) and plenty of books.
The area is very accessible - less than half an hour north of Dublin Airport, about an hour from Dublin Port for visitors arriving in Ireland by car, and not far off the M1 for people travelling down from Northern Ireland – and, aside from the obvious attraction of the beachside location and clear sea views, there is lots to do and see nearby.
With the World Heritage site of Newgrange (‘Ireland’s Stonehenge’) the jewel in its crown of historical claims to fame, the ‘Royal County’ of Meath is known as the Heritage Capital of Ireland – and, if history isn’t your thing, there’s plenty else to choose from including fishing on the River Boyne, golf (40+ courses within an hour’s drive), and the gentle pursuit of visiting houses and gardens.
The town of Drogheda is very close (loads more history and other cultural pursuits including a beautiful art gallery, Highlanes Gallery, and a choice of good restaurants), and many visitors to Meath also like to build a trip to Dublin into their holiday too - and that’s no problem at all, as it’s only a 45 minute drive if you avoid the peak traffic times.
Visitors have been known to describe these luxurious Irish cottages as ‘their little bit of heaven’, and it’s easy to see why.
