Mitchelstown (Irish: Baile Mhistéala) is a small country town in County Cork. Mitchelstown nestles in the valley to the south of the Galtee Mountains close to the Mitchelstown Caves and is roughly 48km (30 miles) from Cork City and 36km (22 miles) from the Republic of Ireland's third city Limerick. The Gradog river runs by the town into the Funcheon river, which in turn is a tributary of the nearby Blackwater river. It is a good example of a 'planned town.'
The local countryside is stunning and Mitchelstown is an ideal base from which to explore it. Golf is available nearby and there is a wide choice of game and coarse fishing. Horse riding is also facilitated in local equestrian centres. Walking is a strength and there is something to suit walkers of all levels and abilities. Doneraile Forest Park and Ballyhoura Mountain Park both offer marked walks, nature trails and orienteering combined with plenty of fresh air and splendid scenery.
The nearby drive along the Blackwater Valley and around by 'The Vee' is one of the most beautiful in the country.
