Roscommon (Irish: Ros Comáin) is the county town of County Roscommon. Roscommon is an important road junction and a good touring centre. It mainly occupies the southern slopes of a gentle hill, and took its name and origin from St Coman, who founded a monastery here in early Christian times.
This busy market town once had a hangwoman called Lady Betty – as well as a Dominican Friary, founded in 1253 by Felim O'Connor, King of Connacht. Roscommon Castle, built in 1269, is an Anglo-Norman fortress.
