Bruckless House Gate Lodge
The first gatelodge at Bruckless House was built in the eighteenth century, before the railway came to the area. When this iron road arrived, it passed through the site of this building of which there is now no trace. In the early 1900s, Thomas Kelly Grene lived in Bruckless House and was a very keen gardener, opening his grounds to the public twice each year to exhibit his blooms. He built the present-day Lodge in order to house his gardener as well as to watch his main gate that had been moved from the earlier site.
Grene used his influence in the County Donegal Railway Company (gone since 1959) to transport stone for the building, and constructed it in the hipped style of the Big House itself. The site had been a byre of some sort with a cobbled floor, and this construction has been left standing to serve as a small outhouse.
The Lodge has two bedrooms - a double-bedded one and another smaller one with two single beds. There is a full sized bathroom, and a living room which also serves as the fully equipped kitchen which has an open fire. There is a television set and all rooms have electric storage heating. It is surrounded by its own garden and the main drive leads directly to the rocky shore of Bruckless Bay.
Guests at the Lodge are always welcome to call at Bruckless House with its informal gardens and cobbled yard where poultry wander between the Connemara Ponies. The Lodge is Approved by the Irish Tourist Board as Two-Star self-catering accommodation.
Bruckless is a small hamlet approximately 18 kms west of Donegal town along the N56 road towards Killybegs. Bruckless House, a listed and protected historical home, is sited off this road, on the left just after the village nameplate.
