Ghan House

Conveniently located just an hour from Dublin or Belfast airports, the Carroll family’s 18th century house is attractively situated in its own grounds on the edge of Carlingford village, with romantic views across the lough to the Mountains of Mourne.

This wedding venues got Catholic, Presbyterian and Church of Ireland churches within 2 minutes walk, and with walled gardens offering privacy and exclusivity, is a very pleasant place to return to. Ghan House also operates a cookery school, so good food is very much part of the deal here, and dining can be in a number of rooms throughout the house or in the drawing room - accommodating wedding parties from 15 guests in one private dining room, to 55 guests in the drawing room, or up to 120 guests throughout the whole house for a very informal fork buffet.

Dancing is in the maple-floored ballroom, and a proper little bar offers a relaxing space where guests can escape from the crowd - something much appreciated by the Irish male when visiting country houses. The venue hire charge depends on the day of the week (€2,000 Sunday-Thursday, €2,500 on Friday, rising to  €3,000 on Saturday), and Paul Carroll seems to have thought of everything: “Have generator back up just in case of power failure!”

Accommodation is in four rooms of character in the main house, each with sea or mountain views, and eight newer bedrooms in a separate building - plus a new hotel at the end of the drive, and plenty of B&Bs in Medieval Carlingford. all less than 5 minutes walk.

For weddings up to 110 guests where the unique atmosphere of a Georgian House lends itself to a very sociable day;
-    Champagne reception on the lawns – overlooked by the adjacent Heritage Centre which is licensed for Civil Ceremonies
-    Dancing in the ballroom
-    Log fires & candlelight

The Drawing Room holds up to 60 guests and has a fully tuned grand piano. There are magnificent views of Slieve Foy, the mountains of Mourne and the castellated walled gardens of Ghan House.

Most of the weddings held at Ghan House have 70 to 110 guests where 2 other dining rooms are used ~ utilising the whole house. Later on the band or DJ sets up in the ballroom.

The Ghan House alternative to the big hotel function room makes for a very intimate, sociable and great wedding!
