Waterford Castle Hotel

Just two miles from Waterford City, this unusual hotel dates back to the 15th century, and is magically situated on its own 310 acre wooded island, reached by a chain linked private ferry. The hotel combines the elegance of earlier times with modern comfort, service and convenience and the location is uniquely serene - it is a highly romantic location, and available for exclusive use for small weddings at certain times.

This wedding venues got churches of all denominations in the area - a lovely coastal church 8km away is a popular choice - and blessings can be held at the castle, which is set in gardens and offers very atmospheric photo opportunities, both inside and out.

A wedding planning service is not offered but recommendations can be made regarding services unavailable on-site (churches, bands, florists, chauffeur-driven cars); the hotel has a 20-seater mini-bus for guests’ use (size limited due to ferry restrictions), and a beautician can be arranged to attend the bridal party in the privacy of their own rooms.

Impressive public rooms with mullioned windows and huge furniture make a terrific setting for the drinks reception, and the dinner is served in the original oak panelled Munster Dining Room which provides a fine backdrop for a special occasion - and it should be a memorable meal: local produce is used as much as possible, including organic vegetables, and the cooking, in a modern classical style, is excellent.

Guest rooms and suites are also full of character and have recently been refurbished and, although they inevitably vary in size and outlook, all are very comfortably furnished in a luxurious country house style.
