Luggala
The jewel in the crown of all the places to stay in Ireland, this house set deep in the Wicklow mountains was famous for the “raffish weekends” thrown there by the present owner’s mother, Oonagh Guinness, one of the “Golden Guinness girls”, and it has also been used as a setting for many films, most recently King Arthur.
The house is at the heart of a huge, very secure and private estate - the drive wanders down the mountainside through woods above the lake for nearly two miles, then lawns sweep up to the front of the deceptively small looking house which dates from the late 18th century when Luggala was the hunting lodge of the Dublin banker Peter Latouche, who made it the ultimate in glamorous grandeur, and it has recently been splendidly decorated under the supervision of David Mlinaric and Amanda Douglas.
Wedding planners and recommended caterers are familiar with the house, which can sleep a maximum of 14 people and can only seat 18 for dinner, so most weddings start with drinks in the house and then have the marquee - which is set on the banks of the lake and is beautiful beyond belief - for dinner and dancing.
Each wedding is tailored to suit the couple’s requirements, so prices are individually quoted - the venue hire charge given here is the approximate amount for the house and marquee for two nights (3 days), and there would be extras added.
This wedding venues menus depend on style and content - a 3 course buffet for 150 can be done for €40 a head, for example, whilst a 5 course sit down meal for 20 with luxurious ingredients such as lobster would be over €100; you may supply your own wines, or it can be supplied by our wedding planner or caterer at cost, so huge saving are potentially available on drinks.
The prettiest local church is at Glendalough, and wedding blessings are possible here; a piper is available, as is a vintage Rolls Royce, and the setting for wedding photographs is simply magic.
