Rathmullan House

Donegal has an other-worldliness that is increasingly hard to capture and, although recently extended, the Wheeler family’s gracious early nineteenth century house - set in lovely gardens on the shores of Lough Swilly - retains a laid-back charm and that special sense of place; the beach is only 100 metres from the front door of the hotel and the drinks reception can be held on the lawn, or around open fires in colder weather.

The house is quite grand, with public areas which include three elegant drawing rooms, but it’s not too formal - and there’s a cellar bar with plenty of atmosphere. 

Wedding blessings are not possible here but there are several churches in the immediate area and, depending on the number of guests, you can return to The Gallery Room (seats 80) - a self-contained, elegantly decorated room available for smaller weddings - or The Weeping Elm restaurant (seats 135), a pleasant room that makes the most of its garden outlook and provides a fine setting for Ian Orr’s carefully sourced modern Irish cooking (and the tremendous breakfasts for which Rathmullan is justly famous).

This wedding venues got a choice of several menu styles, including a personalised buffet option and - a generous gesture - complimentary still and sparkling water for all tables. An experienced team at the hotel can look after every aspect of the wedding from making the wedding cake for you, if required, to arranging for helicopters to land in the grounds.

Accommodation ranges from bedrooms of varying size and outlook in the original house and ten very desirable, individually decorated, newer rooms - and there is plenty of other accommodation locally too.
