Scattery Island Centre

A ruined monastic settlement founded in the early 6th century

Scattery Island lies off the town of Kilrush in the Shannon Estuary and is home to a lighthouse and a ruined monastic settlement founded in the early 6th century by St. Senan who was born locally.

This includes the ruins of six churches and at 120 feet, one of the highest Round Towers in Ireland. Scattery has had many invasions down through the centuries; the Vikings invaded during the early 9th century but Brian Boru later recaptured the island.

An exhibition of the history of the island is housed in the visitor reception building, which is situated near the pier.

Open Daily 7th June-29th August, 10am-6pm. Contact local boat operator for boat departure times
